Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
