Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or did there exist a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that he could resign were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if progress is being made or imploding.

Cancellieri's Surprising Return

At least one man kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He was on the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were advocating for him to extend his stay temporarily. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Finding His True Position

Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
